TANA’s Fall Vacation: Road Trip to Wellness will explore all aspects of wellness, from the personal to the professional, with a good dose of fun thrown in for good measure. If this year’s theme rings a bell, then you’re as smart as you think you are!
Your road trip will include opportunities to hone your decision-making skills, enhance your self-care capabilities, and bone up on the latest advancements in POCUS, pain management, and other clinical hot topics. Learn how to navigate the CPC Program with one-on-one assistance, and venture into the world of maternal health/OB anesthesia. And if somewhere along the way your journey includes a mission trip or business start-up, we'll help you get there.
Of course, any trip is only as good as who accompanies you along the way. That’s why we’re making sure you’ll have plenty of time to network with colleagues from across the state, visit with exhibitors, meet our very own Cousin Eddie, and have your picture made with the vacation station wagon (remember station wagons?)!

Friday, October 21: Road Trip Missions: Oh, the Places You'll Go!
Ray Alonge earned an Associates in Allied Health EMT Paramedic Degree from Seminole State College while working from 1984 through 1995 as a Firefighter/Engineer Paramedic. During his tenure with the Orlando Fire Department he worked on the heavy rescue team holding credentials in High Angle Rescue, Extriction, and as a Hazardous Materials Specialist. In 1995/1997 time he earned an Associate and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees from the University of the State of New York Regents college. He worked as an Emergency Room Nurse and Intensive Care Nurse at Orlando Regional Medical Center and Florida Hospital Orlando holding credentials as a Board Certified Emergency Nurse (BCEN) and Critical Care Nursing (CCRN). In 2000 he earned a Master of Science in Nursing after completing the University of Tennessee Chattanooga/Baroness Erlanger CRNA training program. He has enjoyed teaching EMT and Paramedic certification training and continuing education at Seminole State College from 1988 through 1996 as well as Clinical Assistant Professor for the Nurse Anesthesia Concentration at University of Tennessee Chattanooga where he started bringing SRNAs along on surgical mission trips since 2015. In 2003 he went on his 1st mission trip to Honduras and has been to Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Liberia, Togo, Sierra Leone, Benin, Madagascar, Guinea, and Congo with a number of organizations.
Friday, October 21: Anesthesia in the Austere Environment
Christine is a 2002 graduate of the University of Southern Maine with a master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner. In 2006, she obtained a second masters from the University of New England in Nurse Anesthesia. She completed a post masters certificate program from Georgetown University as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in 2008. In 2021, She completed a dual Master of Business Administration / Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice from the University of Michigan. She has 20 years in the Armed Services and currently hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves. She has recent deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan and Germany. She has extensive experience in critical care and trauma. She has worked in many anesthesia/critical care arenas including solo roles for a plastic surgery practice and a small community hospital. She currently works as a CRNA at Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV and at Prince William Medical Center as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She teaches the Acute Care Nurse Practitioners at Georgetown University in intubations, central line placement as well as in the simulation lab.

Tommy Diller, PhD, CRNA, APN is an Adjunct Professor of Nurse Anesthesia at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, a full-time practicing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at North American Partners of Anesthesia, and recently completed his Ph.D. in Nursing at East Tennessee State University. Tommy’s doctoral research has been focused on cognitive processes and their relationship to skill acquisition. As the Primary Investigator for his dissertation, he laid the groundwork for future research on clinical decision-making and cognitive preference by describing the relationship between Student Nurse Anesthetists and CRNAs. Clinically, Tommy has been practicing anesthesia since 2006 and his clinical specialty area is cardiothoracic anesthesia. In his free time, Tommy and his wife enjoy traveling, hiking, and mountain biking.
Saturday, October 22: NBCRNA & CPC Update, Review & Panel Discussion
Christopher Gill, Ph.D., MBA, CRNA joined the NBCRNA in 2021 as the Chief Credentialing Officer. Before joining the NBCRNA, he worked as a Chief CRNA and subsequently a Regional Director for North American Partners in Anesthesia. In addition, he has had the honor of practicing anesthesia at multiple academic centers, including Northwestern Medicine, the Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham & Women’s Hospital.
He is a proud graduate of the Wayne State University Nurse Anesthesia Program in Detroit, Michigan. He obtained his MBA from the Gies School of Business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Chris received his Ph.D. from Northeastern University, and his dissertation focused on acute post-surgical pain and psychological predictors of opiate consumption. Furthermore, Chris is passionate about resuscitation science, point-of-care ultrasound, and healthcare leadership.
When not engaged in professional pursuits, he enjoys working out and spending time with his family, friends, and dog, Zeus.

Dr. Jordan is the AANA Foundation’s CEO and AANA Chief Advocacy Officer. Lorraine works for the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology and earned her anesthesia and doctoral degrees from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. In her role of Chief Advocacy Officer, she oversees Federal Government Affairs, AANA PAC, State Government Affairs, Practice, Wellness, Professional Education, Publications, Fellows Program and Research and Quality Departments. She serves as the CEO of the AANA Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports research and education of nurse anesthetists. Dr. Jordan is active and served in several organizations such as a surveyor for the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Chair of the Interagency Collaborative on Nursing Statistics, Academy Health, American Academy of Nursing, and Chair of the Nursing Foundation’s organization. Dr. Jordan’s passion includes nurse anesthesia education, anesthesia quality and outcomes, the impact of anesthesia care, cost-effectiveness and healthcare policy.

Victor Martin is the owner of Stage Two Anesthesia, PLLC. He earned his diploma in nurse anesthesiology from Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia in 1986. Martin has been involved with TANA since 2014, first serving as federal political director, Region III Director, and currently as Immediate Past President. Prior to Stage Two Anesthesia, he was a founding partner in Tri-Star Anesthesia PLLC. He has been involved in healthcare since 1980 when he began as an operating room nurse. “A nursing degree was a way to support myself while I decided what I wanted to do when I grew up,” said Martin. “After being exposed to CRNAs working in clinical settings, I knew that’s what I wanted to be. I enjoy the overall challenge.” Martin earned his Bachelor of Arts in healthcare psychology from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 2005 and his MBA from Southern New Hampshire University in 2018. He was born in Lebanon, Tennessee, and has practiced in the state for most of his career.
Friday, October 21: Destination Wellness: No Really, How Are You?
Justin McAdoo began his healthcare career at 18, working as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in pre-hospital care. He has since been a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) for 15 years and recently received his Post-DNP Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) in February 2022. While working on his Doctor of Nursing Practice project, Justin discovered his passion for mental health. He not only desired to care for individuals with mental illness but also longed to help remove the associated stigma. Justin believed it was essential to become involved at both the state and national levels to increase awareness, promote compassion, and foster a healthy environment within the anesthesia community. Since 2019, Justin has volunteered to serve as a State Peer Advisor (SPA) for Tennessee and as a member of the Wellness Committee for the Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists (TANA). Additionally, Justin lectures at Nurse Anesthesia programs to discuss various topics, including substance use disorders, peer assistance, and wellness relating to Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs).
Since becoming a Board Certified PMHNP, Justin has been developing his private practice and consulting service for mental health. Justin focuses on trauma and substance use disorders. He specializes in psychotherapies such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Motivation Interviewing. Justin's future professional interests include attending a clinical training program to study MDMA-Assisted Psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Justin has been married to his best friend and fellow CRNA for 8 years and has three beautiful children, ages 16, 6, and 5. He enjoys family time at Greers Ferry Lake and Seagrove Beach but likes a good Netflix binge.

Dr. Angela Mund received a certificate in Nurse Anesthesia from the Minneapolis Veteran’s Affairs School of Nurse Anesthesia in 1998. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Master of Science degree in 1999 and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2008. She has been very active in nurse anesthesiology for over 20 years including serving as President of the Association of Veteran’s Affairs Nurse Anesthetists and the President of the South Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists as well as on several AANA Committees. Currently, she is the Chair for the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina, leading a team of faculty and staff from the physician assistant, nurse anesthesia, cardiovascular perfusion, healthcare studies, and genetic counseling programs. Dr. Mund is the AANA FY23 President.

Dr. John C. Preston is the Chief Executive Officer for the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA), located in Chicago, IL. Dr. Preston has been active in nurse anesthesia accreditation, education and regulation for over 20 years. His previous career accomplishments include APRN Representative to the Tennessee Board of Nursing, founding graduate director for the nurse anesthesia program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, President of the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and Senior Director for Education and Professional Development with the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. He has been a registered nurse for 37-years and a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist since 1994.

Bill Ragon, CRNA, APN, graduated from Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia in 1981. Bill has worked at Jackson Madison General Hospital, Regional Hospital, and St. Jude Children’s Hospital. He is a member of Samaritans Purse DART. Bill has been deployed with Samaritans Purse DART to Mosul Iraq and Haiti with Samaritans Purse Enjoy doing mission work all over the world. Bill has done missions in seven countries and three continents. He has two sons, a daughter, and eight grandchildren. His wife is a lovely and understanding woman who supports Bill’s call to serve. Starting August 15, 2022, Bill will be partially retired.

Lori is an Assistant Professor of Research at Vanderbilt School of Nursing. Her research interests involve genomic influences on postoperative pain and opioid use. She received her Master’s in nurse anesthesia from Florida International University, and her PhD from the University of Miami. Lori has published articles and lectured nationally and internationally on a variety of topics related to health services research, APRN workforce, pain, opioids, and genetics. She works PRN at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and has 5 grown children, 2.5 grandchildren, and lives in Nashville with her husband and 4 dogs.

Dr. Shields is lead cardiothoracic nurse anesthesiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and has been practicing in Nashville Tennessee for 30 years. He is involved with the American Society of Echocardiography, the Point of Care Ultrasound Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. He has trained extensively with advanced echo techniques for cardiac surgery including 3-D with Phillips and his practice includes heart and lung transplantation, left ventricular assist devices and structural heart surgery. Dr. Shields has published in Anesthesia and Analgesia, the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and the AANA Journal, and offers ultrasound training through POCUSLab.

Dr. Dawn Whybrew earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Harding University in 1995. In 2004 she received an EMT-Paramedic from Creighton University. In 2014 she completed her Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia at Union University. Dawn also completed an EdD in Christian Leadership at Liberty University in 2020. As a CRNA her experience consists of providing anesthesia care in both large metropolitan and rural settings and was formally an assistant professor at Union University. Dawn is a Captain in the United States Army Reserve. She has mobilized stateside to Army medical centers as well as Germany recently proving anesthesia at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. CPT Whybrew was deployed to Afghanistan in 2021 during the now infamous fall of Kabul. She recently received The Army Commendation Medal with Combat as well as the Combat Action Badge for her efforts during the mass casualty events occurring with the fall of Kabul.

Cindi Dabney earned an Associates Degree in Nursing from Gulf Coast State College in 1991 and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1996 from Florida State University. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Bay Medical Center in Panama City until 1999 when she entered The Gooding Institute of Nurse Anesthesia and earned a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia in 2001. After graduation from Nurse Anesthesia program she moved to Memphis, TN and began work as a CRNA. Through the years she enjoyed a variety of anesthesia specialties that ranged from orthopedics, pediatrics, plastics, obstetrical, and general surgery. In 2014 she enrolled in a DNP program at University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) and later joined the faculty in 2016. At UTHSC she served as the Assistant Program Director and developed a love for teaching pathophysiology and simulation. In 2019 she enrolled in the PhD program at UTHSC and is now a PhD Candidate and will graduate in spring 2023. Her research focus centers around decision making and Nurse Anesthesia simulation. In the spring of 2022 she relocated to Tampa, Florida with her family and joined the University of South Florida Nurse Anesthesiology program as an Assistant Professor and serves as the DNP Project Coordinator.

Michael Heck, MS, CRNA, APRN completed his Bachelor’s Degree at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. He completed his Masters Degree in Nurse Anesthesia from Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia in Madison, TN. He worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center before moving to Bowling Green, Kentucky to work at The Medical Center at Bowling Green. He is the current Chief CRNA and works with 35 CRNAs covering 5 hospitals which provide approximately 35,000 anesthetics a year. He has a passion for USGRA, POCUS, TEE, and Cardiac Anesthesia. He also runs a business that teaches basic and advanced transesophageal echocardiography to CRNAs from around the country (POCUSLab.com).

Dr. Molly Wright graduated from Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia in 1994. She has provided anesthesia since that time in both Nashville and Jackson, Tennessee. In the year 2000, she experienced her first mission trip to Brazil, mainly doing construction projects and Bible schools, while also learning cultural differences in the Brazilian villages. This was the beginning of a love for missions and a desire to learn other cultures. After several trips to Brazil, Molly took the first of many medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic providing anesthesia in under served areas. This became a true passion of hers as she realized that giving back is one of life's greatest blessings. She has also served on multiple trips to Haiti and Guatemala. One of her most memorable trips was to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Molly retired from Union University as Chair of the Nurse Anesthesia track in 2019 and continues to provide anesthesia in Jackson. She has been married to her husband, Joel, for 38 years. They have four children, twelve grandchildren and a special pup, Roskoe!

Scott A. Vowels, PhD
Scott A. Vowels currently manages the Supplier Diversity Business Unit for a Fortune 50 corporation where the team has elevated the company’s utilization of diverse suppliers year over year to achieve more than $1B in verifiable spend in 2016, earning the company a seat on the prestigious Billion Dollar Roundtable. Scott is also widely known within the Diversity & Inclusion network for his trail blazing work around the Economic Impact of small business and supplier diversity.
He first made a name for himself by successfully leading both the Northern California and Alabama Minority Supplier Development Councils to national prominence as President & CEO. While leading the Alabama Council, he simultaneously operated a federal Minority Business Opportunity Center for the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency. Early in his career, Scott managed procurement and sourcing processes for manufacturing environments within General Motors and has over 30 combined years of procurement and supplier diversity experience.
In high demand as a speaker and panelist on issues involving women, minority, LGBTQ and small businesses, he is the co-founder and moderator of The Bigger Discussion video series on the Future of Supplier Diversity which collectively, has amassed over 70,000 You Tube views, making it the most watched supplier diversity series on record. Scott is a two-time Amazon best selling author with his first book Don’t Be Afraid to Call the Baby Ugly, published in 2014 and his most recent Hacking Supplier Diversity, which currently sits atop Amazon in both the Supplier Diversity and Minority Business categories.
Scott has appeared numerous times among the 100 Most Influential in Supplier Diversity by both MBN USA and WE USA Magazines. In addition to his published works, he has authored several articles and white papers under The Institute for Thought Diversity, a diversity and inclusion Think Tank he established and leads with industry associates. He holds master's degrees in Business Administration and Economics, and a PhD in Business Administration. Before entering the corporate workforce, Vowels was on an entirely different career path and traveled extensively as a world-ranked professional tennis player. He still counts travel among his greatest passions, but when he's not on the road, Scott calls Oakland, California, home.

Crystal has lived in the Nashville community for 18 years and has seen the growth boom that Nashville and middle Tennessee have experienced. She is originally from Pueblo, Colorado and spent much of her life in Dayton, Ohio.
Crystal started her professional career in social work helping those that were less fortunate to be able to help themselves. She graduated with a BS in psychology from Wright State University and developed therapeutic programs for women and children in a domestic violence shelter. After moving to Nashville, she desired to further her education and obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Belmont University. She began work as a registered nurse in the trauma unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Her continued drive to help those in need was demonstrated by her compassionate care for the patients admitted to the unit. Crystal continued her education by obtaining her master’s in anesthesia from Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia and becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
It was during Crystal’s anesthesia training and post-graduation work that she read studies and started utilizing ketamine in her daily practice, thus becoming very familiar with its efficacy as a pharmacological agent for surgical pain. Her research sparked an interest in owning her own practice. She officially began her journey as a business owner in 2018.
The idea of being able to help others suffering from depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, and many pain disorders has become a reality. Crystal is thrilled to continue her career of patient care with combining traditional, holistic, and innovative treatments to help the Nashville community.
Crystal and her husband Brad enjoy a wonderful life together with their two girls: Abrielle, 16, and Maislynn, 8. Brad is also a CRNA and works in the Nashville community. Crystal and Brad strongly believe in the opportunity to serve their city and look forward to seeing the clinic flourish in the endless possibilities for healing that it offers. Their mission is to help decrease unnecessary suffering so that patients’ lives can be restored.

Kevin Smith, MBA, MSN, CRNA, APN, serves as the Advanced Practice Anesthesia Director for the Mid-South. Prior to joining NAPA, he worked for American Anesthesiology as the Vice President of Advanced Practice Anesthesia, where he was responsible for leadership development, market strategy, and operations management.
Kevin received his BSN from the University of Memphis, his MSN from Arkansas State University, and his MBA from Auburn University.
His professional affiliations include the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and the North Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Kevin is also a past TANA State Reimbursement Specialist, and Finance Committee Chair.
When not at work, Kevin enjoys hiking, playing music, and cooking.

Our host hotel The Embassy Suites is still sold out at this time, but we have secured other accommodations that are walking distance to our meeting location, and are both very nice properties.
