On July 16, the National Board on Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) announced details of the Maintaining Anesthesia Certification (MAC) Program, which launches on August 1, 2024. The MAC Program replaces the Continued Professional Certification Program (CPC) Program. According to the NBCRNA announcement “MAC offers a streamlined four-year certification cycle and is designed to better reflect your evolving professional needs.”
Starting August 1, 2024, CRNAs completing their current CPC Program cycle will transition to MAC. This includes:
- CRNAs in their second cycle with a certification renewal due by July 31, 2024.
- CRNAs in their first cycle who renewed between January 2024 and July 2024.
- Newly certified CRNAs passing the National Certification Examination between January 2024 and July 2024.
CRNAs that do not fall within those dates will continue in the current program—completing their current continued certification cycle requirements—and will start in the MAC program at a later date. NBCRNA states that it will “communicate personalized details based on your certification timeline to ensure a seamless transition.
The three components to the MAC program are:
- MAC Check (replaces CPCA): Solidify core knowledge through a self-paced, dynamic platform. Core Modules have been removed from the MAC Program.
- MAC Ed (60 Class A Credits): Earn continuing education credits via online courses and workshops. Core Modules have been removed from the MAC Program.
- MAC Dev (40 Class B Credits): Foster professional development through activities tailored to CRNAs.
