Dr. Shields is a cardiothoracic nurse anesthesiologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and has been practicing in Nashville Tennessee for 39 years. He is a member of the American Society of Echocardiography, the Point of Care Ultrasound Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. Dr. Shields has published in Anesthesia and Analgesia, the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and the AANA Journal. His clinical practice includes a variety of ultrasound protocols including airway, gastric, trauma, transthoracic and pulmonary. He has trained extensively with advanced transesophageal echo techniques for cardiac surgery and his practice includes heart and lung transplantation, left ventricular assist devices and structural heart surgery. John works with anesthesia residents from a variety of programs and has been a mentor for numerous ultrasound doctoral projects. He also enjoys outdoor cooking and flying his drone in the Nantahala National Forest around Highlands North Carolina.
